I have been sick all week and still struggling to get my strength back. Yuck – I hate loosing entire days just sitting on the couch. I didn’t cook one thing yesterday and never got out of my PJ’s. I hope I feel better before tomorrow since I have a long list of things to do … again.
We are low on basic essential groceries so that is at the top of my list this weekend (more on this subject below). I also need to start pulling out the Thanksgiving recipes and see what special requests are in the mix. We’re staying in Fredericksburg this year and it looks like it will be just our small family. So I’m cooking! Everybody has favorites like broccoli casserole, green bean casserole, chocolate pecan pie, and sweet potato casserole. I can’t forget the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy! Sounds like a lot of food – I better start getting ready.
Last year we had a family reunion in Tennessee and I baked the pies. This is a cell phone photo of that pie-a-rama!
I’ve already had many inquires about fudge and toffee this year. Yes. Absolutely. I am making chocolate and peanut butter fudge, and toffee, in great amounts. I’m going to start the fudge-a-rama just after Thanksgiving. Tutorials for all will be posted on the blog so watch for these how-to’s if you are interested. If you have other requests for the blog, please post a comment so I can plan accordingly. Andrea in my husband’s office requested a Pumpkin Pie so that post is coming up before Thanksgiving (in case she is making one before the holiday.) Leftover pie will certainly be sent to husband’s office in DC! Other items that could be posted include Bourbon Balls (always best for breakfast during the holidays), Russian Tea Cakes, Peanut Butter Blossoms and who knows what else! Put your request in early and let the baking begin!
I was thinking more about our standard grocery list and what essentials we need from week to week. I’ve fallen in love with Maranatha Almond Butter. I normally eat whole grain toast with Almond Butter or a banana smoothie for breakfast each day. I also try to incorporate Greek Yogurt into a meal since it is so high in protein (20 grams). It’s a great stick with-ya kind of food. So besides Almond Butter and Greek Yogurt, we need Almond Milk, Soy Milk, apples, bananas and more bananas, other seasonal fruit, green vegetables, salad stuff, carrots and whole grain breads. Whole wheat pastas, granola or other good for you cereal, Sabra humus, regular low fat milk and cottage cheese! Oh – don’t forget the coffee, we must have daily coffee and this time of year we also love hot tea.
What’s on your must-have grocery list? Do you pack your lunch every day?
