The name of this blog was inspired by a company called Wonderful Graffiti. I read a short article in a 2010 issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. It described the company and how anyone could order custom vinyl stickers for virtually any space in your home or office. I fell in love with the Save Room for Dessert decal and had to have it for my kitchen. I recently found that Wonderful Graffiti closed their doors, and/or sold the business or are on a very long holiday. How sad, they had some wonderfully creative vinyl decorations.
Since adding the decal to my kitchen wall (a place of honor of course), I have often looked at it while having dinner, folding clothes, washing dishes or speaking to my cat (Captain Cat) who sits on top of the fridge surveying the world below.
I came to the conclusion that this mantra can be applied to all areas of my life. Dessert can be spending quality time with a loved one, a pet, or taking the time to pamper yourself. Everyone should save room for the sweetest things in their lives, the stuff that makes us happy!
I have also started to realize (I’m a little stubborn that way) it is impossible for me to skip dessert for the rest of my life. Even though I struggle with weight issues, I think I’ve found a solution that works for me (or works so far in my head). I love to bake. Period. I love it. It is a creative outlet for me. I also enjoy cooking; when I have time to do it right. I especially like to cook for grateful, hungry crowds, like my children’s 20-something friends. So in conjunction with this new blogging experience I am pulling out the old recipes and checking out some new ones. I will try to bake something that makes me (and my taste testing husband) happy each week. And I will share it. With lots of people. With anybody that will eat it. That way I get to bake and enjoy the indulgence but not have to figure out how not to eat every last bite. If I get really desperate, I’ll take some to work. Well … maybe not. I don’t want to share with them. But I will send stuff to my husband’s office!
So we’re celebrating two birthdays in our family tonight. Our son wants to eat at Olive Garden so OG it is! Since I know we’re having birthday cheesecake later, I’m going to stick with a healthy dinner choice such as soup and salad. OG has the best Minestrone Soup and wonderfully fresh salad. I’m saving room for dessert!
