Ingredients

  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 6 ounces low sodium tomato paste (or no salt)
  • teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano or 1 tablespoon fresh chopped oregano leaves
  • 15 ounces low sodium tomato sauce (or no salt)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or garlic salt if using no salt tomato products
  • table salt and black pepper to taste (omit table salt if using salted tomato products)

Instructions

  • Pour the olive oil into a deep, medium saucepan with a lid. Warm over medium heat until shimmering. Add the minced garlic and sauté for a minute or two taking care not to brown or burn the garlic. Add the Italian seasoning, oregano and red pepper flakes, if using. Stir until the mixture is well blended.
  • Add the tomato paste and stir for a minute or two or until the mixture starts to darken in color. Pour in the tomato sauce, onion powder and garlic powder. Stir until blended. Bring the sauce to a boil (it will be very thick). Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer gently for 30 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Use immediately or refrigerate sauce stored in a glass jar until needed. Thin with a little water if needed for desired consistency.

Notes

  • Pizza sauce can be frozen well sealed in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
  • Sodium information was calculated using salted tomato sauce and salted tomato paste products.
  • Recipe makes 2 cups of sauce or enough for 2 large pizzas.
