Easy Chili

Ingredients

  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 can (29 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (29 oz) tomato puree
  • 1 can (29 oz) diced tomatoes in juice
  • 6 ounces tomato paste I would use less next time - maybe just a few tablespoons
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans drained and rinsed
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin or less
  • 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • ½ can baked beans
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • <1 can beer

Instructions

  • Saute the chopped onion and garlic in olive oil until soft. 
  • Add ground turkey and cook until no longer pink.
  • Add all other ingredients and simmer for at least 30 minutes.

Notes

  • Notes:  I added the beer at the end because it was very thick.  Perhaps if I had used ground beef it would have been juicer.  This recipe really needed the extra liquid.  I also would cut down the amount of tomato paste because it tastes very tomato'y.  If I had used less tomato paste and added ground beef instead of turkey, the beer might not have been needed.  I would probably leave that out as well.  We served it with plain Greek yogurt and crackers.  Not bad.  I would make those adjustments and try this recipe again.  I'm going to use the ground turkey or ground venison or maybe even a beef chuck roast.  I am not a fan of ground beef.
