No. 32 – German Chocolate Pie

For more than 20 years my husband worked in radio and TV news. He was blessed to work with some of the most dedicated, fun and talented people in the industry. He still enjoys many lasting friendships from those early days and one such favorite ‘radio star’ is Beth Green. Beth is a lovely person inside and out, and she’s also a talented entertainer, seamstress, blogger, singer (she sang at our wedding almost 26th years ago), and apparently she’s a pretty good cook! Beth also reads SRFD and was kind enough to share this German Chocolate Pie recipe with me.

Beth wrote: “(This recipe) was given to me by Mrs. Joy Jessee, a member of Dryden United Methodist Church (Dryden, Virginia) where my husband Joe was pastor from 1975 to 1980.  She brought the pie to us as a welcome treat the week we moved into the parsonage.  I asked for the recipe and she was gracious enough to share it.  I told her I wasn’t very good at pie-making and she promised this one would be good.  She was right!  It is one of Joe’s favorites!”

You can make your favorite pie crust recipe or try the one at the end of this post.  After making many pies over the years, and more recently 30 something pies, I am in love with this version.   You can even add a tablespoon of sugar to the crust ingredients if your pie is not too sweet.  For this crust you will need Crisco shortening, butter, ice water, salt and flour.
Mix the salt with the flour.
Add the butter and Crisco and blend with a pastry blender.
The mixture should resemble coarse meal.
Add the ice water all at once stirring with a fork just until all dough is moistened.
Press the dough together gently.  It will still be a little sticky.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured piece of wax paper or Saran Wrap.  Form the dough into a disc and cover.  Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.  Roll out and gently fit the crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Do not stretch dough. Trim edges and fold under. Crimp edges to seal and set aside while preparing filling.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Now gather the ingredients for the filling.  You will need butter, German Sweet Chocolate, 1 can evaporated milk, sugar, cornstarch, salt, eggs, vanilla, coconut, and chopped pecans.
Break the chocolate into pieces and place them in a small bowl.  Add the butter and microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds.  Stir to combine and repeat if needed until chocolate is melted. Set aside.
In another small mixing bowl combine the coconut and chopped pecans.
Blend the evaporated milk into the chocolate mixture.
Set aside.
In a medium mixing bowl combine the cornstarch …
… and salt and whisk until blended.
Whisk in the eggs until blended.
Add the vanilla and chocolate mixture.  Whisk until smooth.
Pour the filling into the prepared unbaked pie crust.
Sprinkle the coconut and pecans on top and press lightly to set.
Bake for 45-50 minutes until puffed and lightly browned.
Garnish with sweetened cream, chocolate curls and additional coconut if desired.

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch deep dish pie shell (see notes for recipe link)
  • 4 oz. package German Sweet Chocolate
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 12-oz Can or 1 â…” cup evaporated milk
  • 1 ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • â…› teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 â…“ cup sweetened coconut
  • ¾ cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.  Break chocolate into pieces and place in a small mixing bowl.  Add the butter and microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds.  Stir to blend and repeat until chocolate is almost melted.  Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes or until chocolate is completely melted.  Do not over cook.  Once melted, gradually blend in evaporated milk.  Set aside.
  • Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt in a medium mixing bowl.  Whisk in eggs, add vanilla, then gradually blend in chocolate mixture.
  • Pour filling into an unbaked pie shell.  In a small bowl combine the coconut and chopped pecans.  Sprinkle over filling and press down slightly to set.  Bake at 375°F for 45-50 minutes or until filling is puffed and lightly browned.  The filling will be soft but sets while cooling.
  • Cool at least 4 hours before cutting.  Top with sweetened cream, chocolate curls and additional coconut if desired.

    Although I like chocolate and pecans, shredded coconut is not really my thing – but nonetheless the pie looks awesome! Reminds me of german chocolate cake a bit, just needs a cherry on top! 😉

    Oh my goodness! My grandmother would have loved that pie – she always made German Chocolate cakes and they were the best! I bet a pie would be even better! I have a party to attend this weekend & I'm making one of your pies to bring with me…haven't decided which one yet! :)<br /><br />Oh, & I made pasta tonight and added goat cheese to the sauce like you suggested! Excellent!
