Recently we made an Amazing Whole Wheat Pizza Crust and back in December we had Turkey Meatballs. I was thinking perhaps these would be good together in a calzone. This was a first attempt and they turned out pretty good.
I will probably tweak the meatball pockets a little more next time. Adding peppers and/or onions and a little more cheese would make all the difference. My husband said we should hot pepper cheese instead of the provolone which is very mild. I think that sounds like a great idea. You really can add whatever suits your taste.
Meatball whole wheat calzones
I used this pizza dough recipe but cut it in half. The whole recipe made crust for two large pizzas.
It’s all mixed up and resting in a well oiled bowl.
While the dough is resting, I mixed up the Turkey Meatball recipe.
These are really easy and full of flavor. And they’re not greasy. I don’t do greasy. Yuck.
Rolled into balls and drizzled with a little olive oil.
Ready to go in the oven!
This meatball recipe makes enough that I planned to freeze some for a later marinara dish.
While the meatballs were in the oven, I turned out the dough to let it rise again.
I noticed this really large crack in the dough ball.
It reminded me of something so I took a closer look.
Oh, uuhhh never mind. We won’t go there.
Then meatballs were done and smelled yummy!
As I mentioned above, I thought I would have plenty to freeze for another meal.
But then … my son stopped by. He started popping them in his mouth without sauce or anything.
He really like them – plain ole meatballs. I did get to freeze a few, just a few.
Back to the dough. I rolled a small circle about the size of a salad plate.
I layered provolone cheese on one half of the dough.
I topped the cheese with a few meatballs.
This is where I’ll put onions, peppers and hot pepper cheese on the meatballs next time.
Just to jazz it up a bit.
I cut up some sun-dried tomatoes and put them on top of the meatballs.
I just forgot to take the picture.
The next one I made was a little different. I chopped the meatballs, put the cheese on top so it melted down into the filling and added the sun-dried tomatoes in oil.
I folded the dough over the top of the meat and sealed the edges. I drizzled a little olive oil on top and sprinkled with parsley.
While the calzones were in the oven I warmed up some Newman’s Own Marinara sauce.
This is the first time I tried this sauce and LOVED it.
This 1/2 dough recipe made four really big calzones.
I served them with the Marinara sauce.
I actually poured the sauce down inside the pocket. It worked great!
Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and enjoy!
We’re getting closer to the weekend! It’s almost here. Are you in an area that got lots of snow this week? We didn’t get any snow and it reached 65 degrees today! I feel spring coming around the corner and this has been confirmed by Punxsutawney Phil! The chubby groundhog didn’t see his shadow so we’re supposed to have an early spring. Bring it on! I’m ready to get over to Home Depot and pick up seed packets for the garden.
