Creamy, smooth and flavorful Whipped Feta and Honey is one of the easiest appetizer dips you can make. It’s easily adapted to your favorite flavors and comes together in minutes.
For this recipe we drizzle the dip with a red pepper infused honey for a classic sweet-hot flavor that pairs perfectly with salty feta.
What we love about this Whipped Feta Dip
- It’s hard to beat this sweet and salty combo! Honey adds a nice sweet touch balancing the brininess of the feta.
- If you’re not into a warm heat from red pepper flakes, simply leave them out. It’s still going to be delicious, I promise!
- The Whipped Feta can be made up to 3 days in advance. Add the honey just before serving.
- Garnish with your favorite finely chopped nuts like pistachios, almonds, walnuts, pepitas or pecans for a nice added crunch.
- This dip is smooth and creamy and super easy to make!
- If you have leftovers, use it as a spread on your next sandwich.
Ingredients Overview
For the dip:
- feta cheese – for this recipe I prefer cow’s milk feta as it creates a firmer dip that holds up well at room temperature. Sheep’s milk feta is much softer and may become runny.
- honey
- red pepper flakes (optional)
- fresh lemon juice
- milk or plain Greek yogurt
- olive oil
- pistachios for garnish (optional)
- toasted baguette slices, cruditรฉs, pita bread or any non-salty cracker like water crackers
How to make Whipped Feta with Honey
1. First, rinse the feta
Break the block of feta cheese into about 8 pieces and place in a fine mesh strainer. Rinse briefly under cold water then drain well. This step is optional but helps remove a little bit of the saltiness.
2. Next make the hot honey
While the feta is draining, make the hot honey. Combine the honey and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat until the honey start to simmer. Remove from the heat and cool before using. (Optional: strain the honey removing the red pepper flakes if desired.)
3. Make the dip
Transfer the drained feta to the bowl of a food processor. Add lemon juice and milk then process until blended. With the processor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Scrape the bottom of the bowl and process again until smooth and creamy. Transfer to a serving bowl.
4. Assemble, garnish and serve
Using the back of a spoon make a swirl in the dip. Drizzle the cooled hot honey over the feta. Garnish with finely chopped pistachios. Serve immediately.
Variations and Add-Ins
Make it savory!
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of minced garlic, fresh herbs like oregano and oven roasted olives. Drizzle with olive oil and serve.
- For a thicker dip, reduce the amount of milk added. Or replace the milk with more lemon for a punchier flavor.
- For a tasty and hot honey, add 1/8 teaspoon cayenne with the red pepper flakes. Boil the honey for 30 seconds, then strain to remove the red pepper. Cool and enjoy.
- Top with any of your favorite toasted nuts like pistachios, walnuts, pecans, pepitas or almonds.
Serving suggestions:
My go-to for serving this dip is buttered, toasted baguette slices. I love the crunch combined with the creamy dip and the blend of flavors. Instead of butter brush the bread with olive oil before toasting.
Here are a few more serving ideas you might like to try:
- cruditรฉs – like carrots, celery, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes
- sliced apple wedges
- pita bread triangles
- non-salty crackers like water crackers
- naan bread
- grilled bread slices
