If you’re looking for tender, juicy and flavorful all in one delicious bite, you’ll LOVE this Grilled Greek Chicken Recipe!
Without a doubt, this is a must-make Greek inspired marinade you won’t soon forget. Our Grilled Greek Chicken Recipe is so easy and foolproof, it will be a favorite with the whole family.
With plenty of lemon juice, fresh herbs, silky olive oil and tons of garlic, this yogurt-based marinade infuses all your favorite chicken pieces with the intense Greek flavors we love.
Use this marinade to make grilled Greek chicken skewers with onions and peppers, or grill whole boneless breasts and thighs. You can even use this marinade for our slow Oven Roasted Greek Chicken Breasts recipe too. Choose your favorite chicken pieces and your favorite cooking method and start marinating!
Grilled Greek chicken skewers cook quickly making them great for entertaining.
Skewers are a great choice for casual get togethers on the weekend. These chicken bites are marinated for up to 24 hours so all the prep work is done well in advance.
A few hours before grilling thread the chicken and vegetables onto skewers. Place the skewers on a small sheet pan, cover and refrigerate until ready to grill. The chicken cooks quickly so nobody has to wait too long for dinner to be served.
These delicious bites of chicken are also great as a heavy appetizer, or a small plate dinner party. Mix it up with green or yellow peppers, cherry tomatoes and plenty of onion. Onions are so sweet when grilled, so they’re usually a favorite with guests.
One of my favorite ways to serve these grilled Greek chicken skewers is on fresh homemade Whole Wheat Pita Bread.
Whether you fold the pita like a sandwich or enjoy it pizza style, you’ll find the combination of flavors and textures enticing. Layered with a little fresh arugula, cherry tomatoes and red onion, our Grilled Greek Chicken Recipe is a blank canvas for your next Greek party.
Try drizzling each pita sandwich with Tzatziki or a simple yogurt lemon sauce for a nice acidic bite. Crumbled Feta cheese, Kalamata olives and a smear of hummus are all great additions to this fantastic creation too.
Host a Greek themed party!
Make this Grilled Greek Chicken Recipe part of your next Greek inspired dinner party and enjoy compliments from all your happy guests!
For starters, assemble our easy Greek Layered Hummus Dip and serve with homemade pita chips made from our Whole Wheat Pita Recipe. A crispy and fresh Greek Salad is always a welcome addition to any meal. Enjoy!

Grilled Greek Chicken Recipe
Ingredients
For the marinade:
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (use full fat yogurt for best results)
- ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
- ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
- zest of 1 lemon
- 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons fresh oregano leaves, chopped (or 2 teaspoons dried)
- 1 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves, or 1 teaspoons dried
- 6 medium garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
For the skewers:
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 2-inch pieces for skewers
- 1 large red bell pepper seeded and cut into 1 ½-inch cubes
- 1 medium red onion cut into 1 ½-inch cubes
- 8 skewers (if using wooden skewers soak in water for 30-minutes before grilling)
Instructions
- Combine all the marinade ingredients in a large ziplock bag. Seal and massage the bag to combine all the ingredients.
- Add the chicken to the bag turning to coat. Marinate for 4-24 hours. Turn the bag a few times while marinating.
- Preheat gas grill to 400°F.
- Pour the marinated chicken pieces into a large strainer to remove the excess marinade. Thread chicken pieces onto the skewers alternating with peppers and onions. Grill until the chicken is cooked through, about 4 minutes on each side or until juices run clear.
Recipe Notes
- This simple marinade works great for any kind of chicken pieces from whole boneless, skinless to bone-in thighs and legs. Adjust grilling time to allow for larger pieces.

I can’t get my teenage twins to agree on anything, except that they love this recipe! We make homemade pita or naan and serve with lots of olives, cucumber, and feta. Everyone loves it.
Tricia Buice
Thank you Tera! I love the way you serve it with plenty of everything. Thanks for commenting and for trying our recipe.
Izzy
I made this for a party and I received so many compliments! I didn’t eat it myself as I’m a vegetarian, but I also made the Greek Layered Hummus Dip and the Greek Salad and both were delicious!
Tricia Buice
Thanks Izzy! A Greek themed dinner party is one of my favorite gatherings. So glad you enjoyed both recipes! The layered hummus dip is always a winner.
Gina
Do you think I could use this marinade on pork tenderloin ?
Tricia Buice
Hi Gina. Yes I think it would be great on pork tenderloin. Let us know how it turns out for you!
Julissa
These were super delicious! I made these for my family who would normally never eat something like this (flavor combos they’re not used to) and they were all obsessed. I would definitely recommend!!
Tricia Buice
Thank you for the feedback Julissa! I’m so glad everyone enjoyed these little bites of amazing chicken 🙂 This recipe is a staple at our house especially in the summer. Enjoy!

This really is the best Greek marinate recipe. I am thankful for your amazing recipe and thanks for sharing.
Tricia Buice

Kay
Made this tonight- it was excellent. Thank you!
Tricia Buice
Thank you Kay! I made these last weekend for company. Always a hit 🙂
Katie
Made this recipe today, but instead of grilling, I broiled it on high. Used thin sliced chicken breasts marinated for 24 hours. Put it all on a baking sheet, left the chicken breast whole, instead of chopped. Paired with greens and tzatizki sauce…delicious!
Tricia Buice
Thanks for the feedback Katie! Such a great marinade that works well with any cooking method. Sounds great with tzatziki yum!
Heidi Orr
Hi making these tonight. Do we marinate the veggies also for several hours or just the chicken? Thx!
Tricia Buice
Hi Heidi. No you don’t marinate the vegetables, just the chicken. Enjoy!
Lisa
The chicken kabobs were so delicious!! I loved how the marinade coated the chicken. We will definitely be making this again.
Tricia Buice
Thanks Lisa! We love these kabobs too. So much flavor in each little bite!
Sarah
Looks delicious! Has anyone tried this in a skillet?
Tricia Buice
Hi Sarah. I have not tried this in a skillet on the stovetop, but it works great in the oven. See our post for Oven Roasted Greek Chicken Breasts for cooking information. Enjoy!
Gayle
Fantastic recipe! I could only marinate for an hour and a half; still had wonderful flavor. I will definitely make it again. Thank you!
Tricia Buice
Thank you Gayle! So happy you enjoyed this chicken. We also make this marinade into a baked version I bet you’d enjoy. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Tabby
How much do the chicken breast weigh? I’m using a mixture of breast and thigh and need to adjust the recipe.
Thanks!
Tricia Buice
Hi Tabby. You can use about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of chicken for this recipe. There is plenty of marinade so no worries. Enjoy!
Linda
Love the flavors … I always make enough for leftovers the night.
Tricia Buice
Thanks Linda! I adore this chicken and can eat it once a week, when weather allows. It’s great for company and parties on the deck, too. Thanks for trying it and for taking the time to comment!
Lindsey Williams
Hi, has anyone tried in the oven? And what would be the cook time?
Tricia Buice
Hi Lindsey. If baking in the oven I would preheat to 450F and bake for 15 to 18 minutes. The internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken should register 165F. I’ve also made this recipe with bone-in, skin-on breasts. You can find that recipe here.
Jen M
This was a big hit. I highly recommend. The marinade is awesome. The Greek salad is also a must. Can’t recommend this enough. Everyone including the kids loved it.
Tricia Buice
Thanks Jen! So glad you enjoyed this chicken! We appreciate the feedback and the 4 stars 😉
Cindy
Great marinade! (Just didn’t use red pepper flakes) I did boneless chicken breasts (not cubed) and they were so moist and yummy. Grilled asparagus, cherry tomatoes and onions separately on the side- easier than kabobs for a weeknight!
Tricia Buice
Thanks for the feedback Cindy. I’m making these again for our next family dinner. Quick cooking, flavorful and easy – works for me every time!
Georgina
Delicious. So yummy.
Tricia Buice
Thanks Georgina! Versatile, easy and delicious… works for me 😉
Tonya
This was DELICIOUS! Also, I made a side of marinade for dipping on the side. Amazing
Tricia Buice
I love the idea of additional sauce for dipping! Brilliant Tonya – thanks for trying the recipe and for sharing your feedback 🙂
Susanna
Delicious and easy. My favorite combination. I made this with sides of roasted asparagus and parsley potatoes for a casual spring dinner with friends and everyone raved! I will add this to my “go-to” recipes!
Tricia Buice
I’m so glad Susanna! This is a terrific dinner party recipe. Make ahead and assemble, then grill. Done and done 🙂 We appreciate you trying it and for letting us know how it worked out for you. Bravo!
Becca
I can usually find an easy recipe. Or a healthy recipe. Or a delicious recipe. But not usually all three in one. This, however, is that rare GREAT recipe that ticks all the boxes. The marinade is terrific. I followed it to the letter minus the red pepper flakes because no one in the family likes a little heat but me. Regardless, this meal became an instant family favorite. My spouse said it was better than any of the Greek restaurants we’ve been to, and my eight year old son couldn’t stop announcing how good it was. Neither of those two usually comment much so this was the high praise indeed. I heartily recommend this recipe to all.
Tricia Buice
Oh Becca you made my day! Thanks for the great feedback and for trying the recipe. This is a fool-proof delicious meal and so glad you and your family enjoyed it. We love the food in Greece and agree this is just as good!
Trish
Dee-lish! Hubby raved about it and has requested it several times. I served it with Greek salad and rice pilaf. It’s a perfect summer meal for family and when entertaining. Thank you for a terrific recipe!
Tricia Buice
Thank you Trish! I could eat this at least once a week. The flavors are so terrific and fresh. Thanks for taking the time to comment and let us know how it turned out for you. Best wishes!
Lynley Simmonz
My goodness, this was great. Made this today and the flavours are still there. I made enough for 2 meals – hah! that didn’t happen. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Tricia Buice
Thank you for the feedback Lynley! I love this marinade and it’s perfect with the little pieces of chicken. LOVE it and so glad you did too. Thanks for taking the time to come back and let us know how it turned out for you. 🙂
Lynley
Tricia, I just need to clarify that I didn’t make it for 4 people and then eat the lot!!
I used the meat off 4 drumsticks. LOL.
Tricia Buice
Haha Lynley – this is a judgment free zone! And this chicken is good enough to binge on – 🙂
Holly
Would sour cream work in place of Greek yogurt?
Tricia Buice
Hi Holly. I think sour cream will work but since I haven’t tried it, I can’t say for sure. Good luck and enjoy!
Kali
Did sour cream work?
Emily
Made these for dinner tonight with guests. I used fresh oregano, dried thyme. The skewers were delicious and the chicken had great flavor! I only had time to marinade about 2 hours, but still had plenty of flavor off the grill. I also made the Greek salad and the two dishes accompanied very well. Saving these recipes!
Tricia Buice
That’s terrific Emily! Fresh herbs really make a big difference in some recipes, and this is one. We recently returned from a trip to Greece and all the salads are made like our recipe – simple, fresh and light. These two recipes are great together and I’m thrilled you tried them both! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
Ann
Can you put the chicken in the marinade then freeze it for future use?
Tricia Buice
Hi Ann – I have not tried freezing chicken in a yogurt marinade. In theory it should work fine. Let us know if you try it and how it turned out for you. Thanks for the great question.
Kathy
Would regular balsamic vinegar be okay? I dont think I’d find white locally.
Tricia Buice
Hi Kathy – the color may be darker but the flavor will be great if using regular balsamic. You can also use fresh lemon juice or another vinegar like champagne or red wine. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
mimi rippee
That is so pretty. It’s perfectly cooked! I don’t think I’ve ever used yogurt in a marinade that wasn’t an Indian recipe. Can’t wait to try it!
Tricia Buice
Thanks Mimi – Greek yogurt does amazing things to chicken 🙂
Michelle
Could you supply approx amount of chicken breasts by total weight. The sizes very so much and are huge. Many yrs ago they were about 4 to 6 oz now they can be as much as 12-16. Thanks
Tricia Buice
Hi Michelle – I will start adding that information to my recipes so thanks for the tip. The chicken breasts I buy are usually 5 to 6 ounces each. Hope you give this recipe a try!
Michelle
Thanks so much. This info is very helpful for the success of recipe for me and can’t wait to try!
Tricia Buice
I can’t wait to hear what you think about this chicken Michelle – thanks so much for giving it a try!
Chris Scheuer
A perfect meal, all the way around! The whole thing looks incredibly delicious. Greek-inspired food really calls my name. It’s a winner-winner, chicken dinner, for sure!
Tricia Buice
Haha – thanks so much Chris!
Susan
Beautiful presentation! Kabobs are something we never think of making…probably because DH is not a huge fan of peppers. Love the flavors!
Tricia Buice
I’m not big on peppers either Susan – but love grilled onions and chicken 🙂 These are delicious bites of chicken for sure!
