Try this delicious, easy homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe next time you’re having pizza night at home. The sauce is thick and very well spiced with a deep, rich tomato flavor.
This freezable recipe is made with pantry staples, dried herbs a few cloves of garlic. It makes enough sauce for two large pizzas or is easily doubled. It’s also great served as a dipping sauce for cheesy garlic bread!

Easy Pizza Sauce Recipe
One of my favorite perks for making homemade pizza sauce is being able to control the sodium. Store-bought sauces are sometimes way too salty for me. With this recipe you can adapt to your own needs by using salt-free tomato sauce and/or salt-free tomato paste.
While this recipe needs some salt as a flavor enhancer (as tomato-rich recipes do), there’s no need to go overboard. You can substitute garlic powder for the garlic salt if needed and add table salt to taste at the end.
What could be easier than opening a few cans and measuring out some herbs and spices? Mincing garlic is the only thing that makes a minute. Just wait until you catch a whiff of this sauce cooking on the stovetop. Your whole house will smell like you just wandered into a pizzeria!
Ingredients Overview:
- extra-virgin olive oil (forgot to add it to the above photo!)
- fresh garlic cloves
- Italian seasoning
- dried oregano, or fresh oregano leaves
- red pepper flakes (optional for added zing)
- low-sodium or salt-free tomato paste (good quality)
- low sodium or salt-free tomato sauce (good quality)
- onion powder
- garlic powder or garlic salt if using low sodium tomato products
- table salt and black pepper to taste
How to make our best Pizza Sauce recipe
- Pour the olive oil into a deep, medium saucepan with a lid. Warm over medium heat until shimmering. Add the minced garlic and sauté for a minute or two taking care not to brown or burn the garlic. Add the Italian seasoning, oregano and red pepper flakes, if using. Stir until the mixture is well blended.
- Add the tomato paste and stir for a minute or two or until the mixture starts to darken in color. Pour in the tomato sauce, onion powder and garlic powder. Stir until blended. Bring the sauce to a boil (it will be very thick). Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer gently for 30 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Use immediately or refrigerate in a sealed jar until needed.
What to make with our Pizza Sauce Recipe
- Spread 1 cup of sauce over a store-bought or homemade pizza dough then cover with your favorite toppings and plenty of shredded mozzarella cheese.

- Spread the sauce on a toasted hoagie roll and top with some Italian meatballs and provolone cheese for a fantastic Meatball Sub Sandwich.
- Make this Easy Pizza Dip recipe; the ultra cheesy appetizer everyone loves!
- Use this pizza sauce as the base for our easy Parmesan Chicken Sliders.
Storing and Freezing Pizza Sauce
I recommend storing this sauce in the fridge in a glass jar or bowl with a lid. The warm sauce will stain plastic storage containers.
Refrigerated pizza sauce will keep for up to a week.
Store this pizza sauce in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.
